Featured Candidate - John Goren

John Goren is a well-respected appellate specialist. He has appeared before most of the appellate courts in Texas and is one of very few lawyers to have argued before both the Texas Supreme Court and Court of Criminal Appeals. He is Board Certified in Civil Appellate Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization—a distinction held by less than ½% of the 84,000 licensed Texas lawyers. For over 25 years, he has been rated by his peers in Martindale-Hubbell with its highest “AV” rating for competency and ethics.

A native Texan, John attended Dallas public schools through junior high and graduated with honors from Saint Mark’s School of Texas. He earned a B.S. in Economics from the Wharton Business School of the University of Pennsylvania and his Juris Doctor Cum Laude from the University of Georgia Law School, where he was an editor of the law review and graduated in the top 5% of his class.

Active in the Dallas Bar Association, John has developed a reputation for dependability, innovation and excellence. He founded the first Appellate Law Section of a local bar association in Texas and has served on seven committees, chairing three.  He is the only person the DBA has honored as both most outstanding Committee Chair and most outstanding Section Chair.  He currently serves as Vice-Chair of the Solo & Small Firm Section and, for the third time, Chair of the Memorial & History Committee. When active in the Plano Bar Association (of which he was President), he co-founded the first seminar for divorcing parents created especially for Texas. The award-winning “For Kids’ Sake” seminar is currently given in 57 Texas counties, including Dallas. He served six years on the State Bar committee that oversees continuing legal education of all lawyers in Texas. He was the early advocate for development of internet programs to deliver low-cost, quality education to lawyers. He has also been President of his alumni and homeowners’ associations.

County Court at Law No. 3 needs new leadership now. In 2009, its current judge disposed of the fewest cases at the highest average cost to the taxpayers. John will work hard and restore competency, efficiency and integrity to the court. County Court at Law No. 3 will benefit from a bright legal mind who knows and follows the law.
