Featured Candidate - Cindy Burkett
Cindy and her husband, Air Force veteran and software developer Mike Burkett, were high school sweethearts. Thirty-four years of marriage, three children and now three grandchildren later, they still love and "like" each other. Their family is just like yours. They've lived through the same ups and downs. And Cindy believes it's time for average folks like us to stand up and take control of our government once again.
Cindy's story is all about bootstraps. Mike, her husband, credits her hard work while the two of them worked his way through school. Several years of kids, job and family and church activities later, they put Cindy through school and she completed her degree after eight years of working during the day and going to school at night. And if simply getting her degree under those circumstances wasn't challenging enough - how about graduating Summa Cum Laude with a 4.0 GPA?
The Burketts have worshiped at Mimosa Lane Baptist Church for over eighteen years, and they still remember when the country's children were taught about our American traditions in school and at home. As their children grew up, mom and dad noticed the difference over time and they believe we must once again start instilling our children with a sense of pride in our country and its heritage. America still represents the greatest hope for freedom and it is our duty to protect it for future generations. Ultimately, that's why Cindy, is running.
Two years ago, Cindy became vice president and co-owner of a company that owns five Subway Sandwich shops. Sounds glamorous to say you own your own business, but when it gets down to it, you end up being responsible for just about every job – hiring and training employees, paying invoices, balancing the books and when necessary physically opening stores and doing everything from baking bread, mopping the floors, to cleaning bathrooms.
Cindy does actually make a great sandwich these days. If you see her in one of her stores, ask for the black forest ham on flatbread. It's the best. And Cindy has learned firsthand that government is not making life any easier for employers.
And Cindy's working hard to keep people on the job, despite excessive government regulation and an increased tax burden. It's time we had someone in elected office who has first hand experience with these issues.
